MGMT: Congratulations

MGMT's second album isn't all mannered paisley – there are perfect pop tunes in there too, says Kitty Empire

Billed as commercial suicide, MGMT's second album takes a sharp turn away from the irresistible singles of their debut and into a mannered paisley whorl. This is an album of meandering psychaedelia, curated by a series of band heroes (production by Sonic Boom, backing vocals by Jennifer Herrema). But the world-conquering Brooklyn duo have not abandoned pop, as some slyly nagging songs attest. "Someone's Missing" has the kind of chorus that festival crowds can grasp, while the compelling "I Found a Whistle" will still command swaying glowsticks to the vertical.
