Simple KId

Ciaran McFeely's second album as Simple Kid is the friend you can turn to at 4am when everyone else you know is asleep. Having girlfriend trouble? Here's Oh Heart, Don't Be Bitter and Love's an Enigma (Pt II), one a gorgeously slanting, Japanese print of a song bucking up a broken heart, the other a furious rock howl at a careless lover. Planning to wallow in whisky and biscuits? First turn to McFeely's twinkling Self-Help Book: "If you get drunk tonight, you're gonna fall down," he notes sagely, "if you eat too much pie, you're gonna be fat." Convinced you're the only person in the world to feel this rotten? Oh no. Serotonin may be one of the best songs about depression ever written, its stormy, surging melodies and frowning lyrics unexpectedly soothing.

This is a wonderful album: musically, it's ingenious, a bustling congregation of styles - glam, folk, crackling electronica - that continually take the listener by surprise. And lyrically, for all its downbeat malaise, it has a sincerity and candour that can't fail to charm.
