Buddy Miller: The Majestic Silver Strings – review

Fresh from working with Robert Plant, Buddy Miller continues his hot streak with this collection of country curios, writes Neil Spencer

After years as an unsung Nashville session guitarist, Miller is on a roll as a producer (he bossed Robert Plant's Band of Joy) and lead. Here, he assembles stellar friends for a selection of antique country curios well salted with new material. Having Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin croon old Lefty Frizzell ballads is predictably delightful, but recasting Roger Miller's comic "Dang Me" as dark swamp blues is a surprise. Fellow axe hero Marc Ribot shows up to twang along and to contribute "Meds", a creepy mental-ward ballad, and the mix of nostalgia, wacky arrangements and sheer class (try Miller's "God's Winged Horse") proves winning.
