Bob Chilcott: Everyone Sang – review

The influence of Bob Chilcott's years with the King's Singers is evident on this welcome recording, writes Stephen Pritchard

It's difficult for any good choral ensemble, amateur or professional, not to include music by Bob Chilcott in their programmes these days: he seems impossible to ignore, probably because he writes such engaging, rewarding music. You can hear the influence of his years with the King's Singers in this recording: lots of imaginative harmony and sprightly word-painting. Several collections are bolted together here: his Aesop's Fables settings, his Little Jazz Mass and – most successful, in my view – his cycle I Share Creation, hauntingly lovely settings of texts dwelling on our relationship with the planet, sung with warmth, precision and commitment by young alumni from Wells Cathedral school.
