Yazz Ahmed: Finding My Way Home – review

The trumpeter's Middle Eastern-flavoured debut is an impressive showcase of her composing talents, writes Dave Gelly

An absorbing debut album by this young trumpeter-composer, perhaps a little too subdued in tone but packed with ideas. Of the 10 pieces, most are original, several based on what I take to be Middle Eastern scales or rhythms, and all impressively arranged for 12 players in varying combinations and full of fascinating textures. It's all so fresh and inventive that its style is its own, but the shadow of Miles Davis lurks somewhere in the background. Perhaps more significantly, Ahmed's first inspiration was her grandfather, the late Terry Brown, noted British bebop trumpeter of the 1950s and 60s.
