The Park Lane Group's series showcasing up-and-coming talent performing contemporary music has become a new-year institution. The repertory ranges from 1934 to the present, well seasoned with world and British premieres, while performers include three string quartets (the Harpham, Brodowski and Barbirolli, pictured), pianists, clarinettists and three singers. The opening concert shows the breadth of the programming, as the Harpham Quartet plays works by Helmut Lachenman and Malcolm Arnold, stylistically about as far apart as any two 20th-century composers could possibly be.
