Bob Stuckey and Dudu Pukwana: Night Time Is the Right Time

Bob Stuckey and Dudu Pukwana's recordings from the mid-60s evoke the excitement of sweaty, smoky Soho, says Dave Gelly

When Ronnie Scott moved his club to new premises at the end of 1965, there were 18 months of lease left on the old place, which he handed over to young musicians, these two among them. Stuckey was a junior wonder of the Hammond organ and Pukwana a refugee saxophonist from apartheid South Africa. These 14 tracks, recorded live, evoke the excitement of the smoky, sweaty, marathon all-nighters in that Gerrard Street basement. They also reveal how mature musicians in their 20s could sound as a result of working flat-out for long stretches in these circumstances.
