This strange work was given its UK premiere by these Danish players and singers in a BBC Prom last week. Placing its vast resources around the Albert Hall gave the piece plenty of elbow room, something this recording, made in Copenhagen, strives to create – parking the required "distant orchestra" a good way off and putting stylish soprano Inger Dam-Jensen in bright, focused close-up – but it's an uneven, unrewarding experience as whispering pianissimos give way to sudden, shattering fortissimos. Controlling the volume is a full-time job.
