Delius: A Mass of Life – review

Delius's vast 1905 work is brilliantly realised on this sumptuous double CD, writes Stephen Pritchard

Delius's music is everywhere this year, the 150th anniversary of his birth. The Proms are doing him proud with a generous helping of the major works, but not his vast Mass of Life. You'll have to go to the Edinburgh festival if you want to hear it live, or stay at home and listen to this sumptuous new recording by David Hill and the Bach Choir. The singing is suitably majestic for Nietzsche's vision of mankind's destiny, even though the composer makes impossible demands on the sopranos, keeping them in the upper atmosphere for what feels like days. Hill draws some marvellously expressive playing from the BSO, with soloists – chief among them Alan Opie – in magnificent form.
