Pantha Du Prince: Black Noise

It's minimal techno, but not as we know it… Pantha Du Prince chucks in marimbas and all sorts in an enchanting sound experiment, writes Kitty Empire

Minimal techno tends to be a hermetically sealed subgenre, devoted to precise digital rustles. Germany's Hendrik Weber, now on his third album as Pantha Du Prince, has prised open that seal, letting found sounds – wind, bells and even acoustic instruments like the marimba – into this compressed electronic world. The result is a varied, propulsive and expressive album which doesn't quite succeed in its stated quest to reveal the inaudible music inherent in all matter, but enchants all the same. There's only one bum note. Panda Bear from psychedelicists Animal Collective lends a vocal to 'Stick To My Side', which is, perhaps, a step too far away from the bunker.
