The Killers: Day & Age

Bringing in synth-funk genius Stuart Pierce has helped the Las Vegas quartet rediscover their razzle dazzle, says Hugh Montgomery

For their third LP, the Killers have roped in electro-savvy producer Stuart Price and rediscovered their razzle dazzle. Casting aside the self-important Springsteenisms of Sam's Town, this is a tongue-in-cheek companion to debut Hot Fuss, deploying honking sax alongside the old armoury of glam riffs, pulsing synths and showboating choruses. 'Human' is their best single since 'Mr Brightside', but from the calypso-driven 'I Can't Stay' to the campy euphoria of 'The World We Live in', this time the whole album sparkles. Well, except portentous closer 'Goodnight, Travel Well', proof that they're best off sticking to the sequined shallows.
