Micah P Hinson and the Nothing review – Texan singer makes gleeful return

Folk star Micah P Hinson's first album since he was injured in a car crash throbs with life, writes Ally Carnwath

Texan Micah P Hinson continues to summon beautiful music out of bitter experience. His 2004 debut was informed by a past of prescription drug addiction and homelessness; his latest was recorded with friends after a car crash left him at risk of losing the use of his arms. He faces adversity with his usual level gaze and bone-dry wit, but these songs - demoed before his accident but refashioned after it – also thrum with a palpable joy at music-making. There's Only One Name has an unexpectedly breezy bluegrass swing, while opener How Are You... builds to a gleeful cacophony.
