Bill Bruford/Larry Coryell Pizza Express Jazz Club, London Rating: ***

Like Charlie Watts, the rock drummer Bill Bruford (Genesis, King Crimson, Yes) had his heart in jazz all along. Bruford even tried to persuade some of his heavy-hitting associates to lighten up to a jazzier repertoire, but since they had more business sense than that, he eventually concluded that the only way was to do it himself.

Bruford formed his highly personal notion of a fusion band, Earthworks, in 1986; Django Bates and Iain Ballamy were inventive early members. The current version is at the Pizza Express until Saturday, with the American guitarist Larry Coryell guesting until Thurs day. Bruford's sidelong, slippery tunes, with their Breckerish postbop turns, odd confections of time, percussive phrasing and sudden crash-stops, were the highly effective anchor of the show. On Monday, the just-arrived Coryell was feeling his way, but a fluid understanding between the players began to grow.

Maybe the shortage of rehearsal time led this particular configuration to fall back on folk-memories; in any case, it made for a diverting performance. Bruford sounded more like Art Blakey than usual, snare rolls dropping into tantalising pauses before the cymbal pulse scurried in, bumpy accents stretching and compressing the beat. Coryell's approach was reminiscent of the late Wes Montgomery, softly whirling bop runs giving way to driving improvisations in chords and octaves. Pianist Steve Hamilton contributed a tidal energy to the complex opener Never the Same Way Once, while the laconic melodic twists of If Summer Had its Ghosts highlighted the intriguing idiosyncrasies of the excellent, guttural-toned saxophonist Patrick Clahar: his deep, gargly warble, bagpipe-like long notes and inventive contrasts of phrase-shapes. One to catch, and probably before Coryell's four days end, because the whole show will tighten up.

Until Saturday. Box office: 020-7439 8722.
