Rise to Remain: City of Vultures – review

Frontman Austin Dickinson may be Iron Maiden singer Bruce's son, but that hasn't stopped London metallers Rise to Remain from producing a full-length debut that stands up on its own, writes Phil Mongredien

Despite having won "best new act" awards from both Kerrang! and Metal Hammer last year, London-based metalcore five-piece Rise to Remain have attracted almost as much attention for the fact that frontman Austin Dickinson is the son of Iron Maiden singer Bruce. Twin-guitar harmonising aside, there's little in common with Maiden here, Dickinson Jr screaming as often as he sings. The urgent-sounding "This Day Is Mine" is the pick of their largely impressive full-length debut, the melodic choruses offset by barked vocals and shred guitar. The more restrained "Roads" merely sounds earnestly plodding.
