Various: Works for flute and orchestra – Katherine Bryan (flute), Royal Scottish National Orchestra/ Daniel

The Lowell Liebermann may come across like a film score, but Lennox Berkeley's recolouring of Poulenc and Nielsen's 1926 concerto are beautifully rendered by Katherine Bryan and the RSNO, writes Stephen Pritchard

Top billing here is given to Lowell Liebermann's concerto from 1992 but it's the least interesting piece on the disc. Katherine Bryan plays its trite and shallow film-score melodies well enough but the chief delight here is Lennox Berkeley's orchestration of Poulenc's brilliantly coloured flute sonata from 1957, which packs more ideas into a few minutes than anything achieved in Liebermann's laboured full-scale concerto. Bryan also gives a nimble account of Nielsen's quixotic 1926 concerto, beautifully supported by Paul Daniel and the Scottish National players.
