Boccherini: La musica notturna delle strade di Madrid – review

The superb Cuarteto Casals breathe new life into Boccherini, writes Nicholas Kenyon

Luigi Boccherini was Italian-born but served the Spanish court, and he evoked the street scenes of Madrid with a soundscape worthy of Charles Ives in the programmatic String Quintet in C. Many have been fascinated by this piece's vivid evocation of bells, beggars, drums and the rosary: Luciano Berio orchestrated it. Here the superb Cuarteto Casals dispatch it with atmospheric precision, and their whole disc is a delight, from the E major string quintet (including the immortal minuet) to the serious G minor string quartet with its angular minuet, and the exhilarating fandango of his sixth guitar quintet. A reputation-changing disc for Boccherini.
