Patrick Wolf: Lupercalia – review

Patrick Wolf's contentment with his love life shines through on his jubilant fifth LP, writes Hermione Hoby

Patrick Wolf is the most sincere of pop stars and that, combined with a reputation for ostentation, is perhaps what's put people off. But this, his fifth album, should blast away those reservations. Wolf is in love - he will marry his long-term boyfriend this year - and these songs unabashedly shout that from the rooftops. Infused with a new romantic grandiosity, the first three tracks, in particular, are gloriously euphoric. Things inevitably sag a little towards the end ("Slow Motion" is aptly named) but even that can't dint the prevailing mood of jubilation.
