Schubert: Symphony No 7 (‘Unfinished’), Rondo, Concerto, Polonaise – review

Schubert's Unfinished Symphony isn't the main draw on this attractive disc of music for violin by Schubert, writes Nicholas Kenyon

Schubert never wrote a violin concerto, more's the pity, but the three isolated pieces gathered on this disc by soloist Andreas Janke make an attractive if lightweight group: a little Rondo with strings only, a perky Polonaise written for Schubert's older brother, Ferdinand, and the full-orchestra Konzertstück, a big-boned, exuberant work in the spirit of Schubert's overtures. Most purchasers are likely to buy the disc for the Unfinished Symphony (which we call No 8, though Europe prefers to call it No 7), a beautifully warm and serene performance under David Zinman, with little touches of ornamentation in the solo clarinet part.
