Julien Jacob

An easy-going, pleasantly laid-back set from a singer-songwriter who was born in Benin, West Africa, spent much of his life studying literature and playing in rock bands in France, and who now sets out to confuse.

Julien Jacob has a fine, deep and relaxed voice and mixes African influences with anything from western pop balladry to reggae, in a melodic fusion that sounds at times like high-quality late-night mood music.

Those who want to know what his ballads are all about will be in for something of a surprise. According to the sleeve notes, his lyrics "can be interpreted as you wish as they are the creation of his own imagination". Which means that he simply makes up suitable noises to go with his songs.

It's not a completely original approach - many songs have nonsensical lyrics or scat effects - but strong melodies like these deserve thoughtful lyrics.
