Rhydian: Waves – review

Even Rhydian's secret admirers will struggle to love this collection of poperatic interpretations, writes Ally Carnwath

Rhydian is not to be redeemed as a thorn in the side of joyless music snobs. Admire him, if you must, for his tenacity in maintaining a post-X Factor career. Admire, for a matter of seconds, the camp melodrama he applies by the bucketload in brazen contravention of good taste. But even then you'll struggle to admire his latest record, a collection of earnest poperatic interpretations of 80s hits, entirely devoid of wit, sparkle or sincerity. Not much of his source material here is lovable enough for this to be termed a desecration, but that small mercy is about as good as Waves gets.
