Liane Carroll: Up and Down – review

The sheer musicality of Liane Carroll is finally captured on this superb disc, writes Dave Gelly

No one who hears Liane Carroll in person is likely to forget the experience. It's not just that she's a brilliant pianist and a mesmerising singer, but that, like Stevie Wonder, she seems in some magical way to be made out of music. No recording has managed to capture this quality until now, but this one comes close. There's so much variety in these 12 tracks, from devastating swing to tender ballad to spirit-lifting soul, that the only thing to do is let them roll over you. There's great playing, too, by guests such as Kenny Wheeler, Kirk Whalum, Julian Siegel and James McMillan.
