Bartók was a virtuoso pianist but his intimate feeling for string writing is evident in his many compositions for violin and viola, as well as for the medium of string quartet. The three concertos here, all played by the superbly expressive Canadian violinist/violist James Ehnes on a Stradivarius violin and a Guadagnini viola, span Bartók's career. The tender mood of the opening of No 1 (1907-8) surfaces again in the later concertos despite their more angular nature. The haunting Viola Concerto was incomplete at the time of Bartók's death in 1945; the version finished by his friend Tibor Serly is played here. Gianandrea Noseda and the BBC Philharmonic are sensitive, skilful partners.
