JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys: Fidelity! – review

Chrissie Hynde's album with former lover JP Jones is a bit of a damp squib, says Hermione Hoby

"Perfect Lover", the opening track on her first non-Pretenders album, has Chrissie Hynde crooning wryly: "He was learning to stand/ When I was wearing my first wedding band." She's referring to her collaborator, the Welsh singer JP Jones, with whom she abandoned a relationship after deciding that 27 years posed too problematic an age gap. Sadly, rather like the romance that wasn't, most of these songs don't quite take off: Hynde sounds supreme throughout, but even her cool can't save a track as cheesy as "Australia", while Jones's grizzled croak often bursts in with alarming abruptness.
