Jennifer Hudson: I Remember Me – review

The songs on Jennifer Hudson's second album struggle for poignancy, writes Kitty Empire

If an R&B/soul diva needs to overcome tragedy, then Jennifer Hudson is well on her way. Any precis of her progress thus far can't fail to mention the murder of her mother, sister and nephew in 2008, overshadowing that Grammy (for her 2008 debut) and Academy award (for the film Dreamgirls; her next role is Winnie Mandela). Huskier than most, Hudson's voice thrums with a richness that evades much of her competition (Beyoncé, say). That said, the songs on her second album don't ask much of her, and even the title track struggles to be sufficiently poignant.
