Glasvegas: Euphoric /// Heartbreak \\\ – review

Glasvegas aim high on their second album but succumb to an overdose of bombast, writes Hermione Hoby

Those silly titular slashes bode ill, but unnecessary punctuation turns out to be the least of Glasvegas's problems on this long-awaited follow-up to their mordant 2008 debut. "There will be no holding back," sings James Allan on the typically bombastic "Dream Dream Dreaming", and that seems to have been a maxim for the entire album: the band moved from Glasgow to a Santa Monica beach mansion to write this, hiring U2 producer Flood to crank up the stadium-aspiring sounds and, sadly, the result is overblown. These tracks aim to soar but over-production and bluster tend to dwarf their substance.
