For those who find stoner-rock a little too refined, Baltimore quartet Arbouretum produce rough-hewn rock'n'roll that seems custom-made to be the soundtrack for some mythical peyote binge in the desert. The guitars are terrifically sludgy, the drums thunderously slow, band linchpin Dave Heumann barks out dire warnings about "ashen riders on shadow mares" and the grooves combine steamroller momentum with psychedelic drift. Heumann's soloing won't be to everyone's taste, but a fine cover of Jimmy Webb's "The Highwayman" does provide a ringing counterpoint to their rock heft.
