I Like Men review – surprises and subtle perfection from Rebecca Kilgore

Rebecca Kilgore unearths some little-known gems for this pitch-perfect collection, writes Dave Gelly

Still little known in Britain, but with a solid following in the US, Rebecca Kilgore stands out among the current generation of "standards" singers, not only for her considerable vocal talents but also as a seeker-out of neglected songs. Here, mixed in with more familiar material, you will find such outbursts of exasperated affection as Down Boy, An Occasional Man and The Gentleman Is a Dope. Together with tenor saxophonist Harry Allen's quartet (including that immaculate pianist Rossano Sportiello), Kilgore brings them all swinging back to life. Well over an hour of subtle perfection.
