Battles: Gloss Drop – review

Battles' new album lacks the thrust of their debut, but they've turned up the fun without their former frontman, says Killian Fox

New York experimental rockers Battles have gained a huge following since their 2007 debut Mirrored, but last year, midway through recording a follow-up, they lost their lead vocalist, Tyondai Braxton, to his solo career. The band have replaced him, on Gloss Drop, with a series of guest vocalists, including Gary Numan and Chilean techno producer Matias Aguayo. The music is as intense, intricate and strange as before, and while the new album doesn't quite pack the punch of Mirrored, it has a greater sense of fun and some dazzling moments, particularly the otherworldly closer "Sundome", featuring Yamantaka Eye of the Boredoms.
