Bangs & Works Vol 1: Various Artists – review

Footwork might be seemingly impossible to dance to, but there are occasional flashes of haunting grace, writes Kitty Empire

Chicago may be the crucible of house, but its latest craze – known as footwork – defies most definitions of dance music. You shouldn't be able to dance to these tinny, skeletal, sped-up, repetitive, arrhythmic tracks, but fleet-footed Chicagoans do, battling it out like breakdancers to tracks where lines such as "Yo shit's fucked up" are repeated ad nauseam. Bass is optional in footwork, but there's sometimes a haunting grace lurking within the aggressive anomie, a tactic with parallels in dubstep or the brutalist experiments of the Aphex Twin. Look no further for an antidote to the season.
