Angélique Kidjo: Eve – review

Angélique Kidjo pays homage to African women on her 11th album, writes Neil Spencer

An indomitable performer with an electrifying voice, a social activist and Unicef ambassador, Angélique Kidjo is a force of nature. This 11th album coincides with a memoir, Spirit Rising, and a concert with Philip Glass based on Yoruba creation myth. Eve pays homage to African women, with songs about arranged marriage and peace-making, most featuring female choirs from Kidjo's native Benin. It's a clarion call, albeit without much vocal subtlety beyond its beefy choral call-and response; a smoky turn from Nigerian diva ASA on the title cut is the exception. Inveterate collaborators Dr John and Kairos 4tet also add variety to a somewhat one-paced set.
