In 2008, certain strands of dance music took on deeper tones, from German techno to UK funky. A welcome effect of this was to throw the spotlight on the deep house producers already plying their trade. In particular, Quentin Harris, a fixture on the gay New York house scene, stood out. On Mix the Vibe, he compiles a selection of immaculately turned-out cuts. Soulful vocals rub up against sleek grooves and sleazy basslines. In its closing stages, it becomes awe-inspiringly large. Harris's own remix of Dennis Ferrer's Touched the Sky is an endlessly building epic on which vocalist Mia Tuttavilla is propelled from aching restraint to ecstatic climax by thunderclap beats, menacing strings and frenzied chants. It feels like the heavens opening.
