Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings: Give the People What They Want – review

The fifth album by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings is infused with an intoxicating energy, says Paul Mardles

No act has done more to promote retro soul than the 11-strong Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Their fifth album, put back from last year when the commanding Jones was diagnosed with cancer, is yet another set steeped in the spirit of Motown, all passion, cheating men and "real" instruments. Occasionally the period trappings prove tiresome - does the world really need any more songs that beseech us to "get up and come together"? - but Give the People's energy is intoxicating, particularly when Jones vents her fury at injustice, as on People Don't Get What They Deserve.
