Févin: Requiem d’Anne de Bretagne – review

Breton singer Yann-Fañch Kemener brings vigour to this austerely beautiful work, writes Nicholas Kenyon

This sober and beautiful disc evokes the funeral in 1514 of Anne of Brittany, who uniquely was the wife of two kings of France, Charles VIII and Louis XII. It is based around the rich Requiem mass by Antoine de Févin, with its two bass lines giving a deep and sonorous quality to the music, enhanced here by low-pitched instruments. Regrettably there's no actual evidence that Févin's mass was heard at the funeral, though the composer was a close friend of Louis XII. What makes the disc really special are the interpolated solo numbers by the present-day Breton chansonnier Yann-Fañch Kemener, singing gwerzioù (epic laments) that movingly evoke a continuity across the centuries.
