Overlook the mention of Kennington at the start of their debut album and you might assume the Fruitful Earth were from the other side of the Atlantic, and perhaps a few decades back, rather than present-day south London. A big, jaunty piano sits at the fore of each track, inviting Elton John and Carole King comparisons, and frontwoman Sarah Blair sings things such as: "I'm a blind-faith believer, I'm on a road to open up my mind." The songwriting is solid, until Blair tries her hand at protest lyrics: "War Song" and "Human Nature" have their hearts in the right place but deal in awkward generalities.
