Dvořák: Songs My Great-Grandfather Taught Me

Josef Suk's performances of his own transcriptions of great-grandfather Dvořák's songs for violin and viola, in the company of Vladimir Ashkenazy? Who could ask for more, says Stephen Pritchard

Another bright idea from Toccata Classics's Martin Anderson. He has persuaded Josef Suk to transcribe the songs of his great-grandfather, Antonín Dvořák, for violin and viola, giving new life to these charming but neglected miniatures. With Ashkenazy at the piano and Suk playing Dvořák's own viola, this is a major coup for Anderson and his ambitious label. More than 30 items include Love Songs Op 83, Biblical Songs Op 99 and Gypsy Melodies Op 55, with the popular Songs My Mother Taught Me, giving the recording a gift of a title to play with. A tender and highly personal collection to cherish.
