The Killers

The annual NME tour is traditionally a matey affair where all bands are deemed equal, but no one has told the Killers. Keeping the audience waiting a whole hour after previous band the Futureheads, the clear message is that they are stars. Their intro music lasts five minutes, and when the band finally grace us with their presence, it's to on-stage silence. Finally, frontman Brandon Flowers gets the evening going with a "Ready... steady? Go!"

Such ruthless efficiency has taken the Las Vegas quartet from unknown status a year ago to the current number one album slot for Hot Fuss. Admittedly, they have only had to fend off the likes of Scissor Sisters, but a number one is still a number one. To emphasise their status, Flowers wears a pink jacket that Freddie Mercury might have deemed too garish, while the guitarists throw rock poses.

Their music is an odd juxtaposition of Las Vegas schmaltz and British gloom. It's part second-division Britpop (Shed Seven, Menswear) and part second-division New Romantic (OMD, Berlin), all served up with a dollop of euro-rock and enough big gestures to appeal to both students and stadiums. The Killers aren't original, but they are outrageously, unrepentantly professional. Every U2 guitar solo is delivered just so.

On the screens, grainy, monochrome footage of the band makes things appear more arty than they are. The Killers are about showbiz first, songs second; in fact a couple of songs - notably the lyrically awful Indie Rock'n'Roll ("is in my soul" - get out more, you poor man) are very much second. But a few justify the hot fuss. All These Things I've Done is gorgeously enormous and will slay this summer's festivals, so long as the band bother to turn up before everyone else has gone home.
