The veteran troubadours of world fusion celebrate their 30th anniversary with a typically mercurial creation, brimming with musical styles and poetic evocations of place and mood. One moment singer Denis Péan is growling about a "mundane Wednesday", the next he's feting the mosques of Algiers or calling for "La Marseillaise en créole". With the Nid el Mourid sisters' vocals offsetting Péan's Waitsian musings, the group draw freely from Romany jazz, French chanson and African folk. Robert Wyatt sings lovely scat on the title track, friends from Tinariwen are also on hand and, though the album loses focus later on, it's a breezy, charming excursion.
