Most publicity may be good publicity, but Von Bondies singer Jason Stollsteimer probably overdid it with that nightclub brawl with Jack White in Detroit before Christmas.
Still, black eyes and contusions are incontestable evidence of his band's Detroit raunchiness, and on this third album they serve up a lethal dose of sandbagging powerchords, drums that sound like collapsing skyscrapers, and buckets of punk attitude. They leap out of the traps with the triple-slam of No Regrets, Broken Man and C'mon C'mon, each a holocaust of guitars and tumbling momentum. Guitarist Marcie Bolen and bassist Carrie Smith also chip in with nifty extra vocals, squirting a dose of gum-chewing hostility into Tell Me What You See and Not That Social. Once they sink their teeth in, this bunch don't let go.
