Vittorio Grigolo: The Italian Tenor/ Orchestra de Teatro Regio di Parma/ Morandi – review

Don't be put off by the dashing good looks – Vittorio Grigolo is the real deal, says Stephen Pritchard

No fewer than 10 portraits of the handsome Vittorio Grigolo adorn the sleeve and notes of this showcase CD, suggesting that this is merely a vehicle for a pin-up with a penchant for Puccini, but young Vittorio Grigolo has a flexible, sweet-toned tenor which promises a long career ahead. He lends suitable swagger to "Possente amor mi chiama" from Rigoletto and brings real tenderness to "Spirto gentil" from La favorita. Arezzo-born Grigolo is the real thing: a shining, stylish romantic hero in the great tradition of the Italian tenor, but with a warmer, more appealing persona for 21st-century audiences.
