Bach: Cantatas Vol 51 – Review

Even by the standards of Suzuki's cantata series, this is an outstanding release, writes Nicholas Kenyon

Even by the standards of Suzuki's continuing cantata series (which has now reached the secular cantatas alongside the end of the sacred cantatas), this is an outstanding release of four really strong works including two fine wedding cantatas. The subtitle is misleading, since the version of BWV 195 recorded here in all its trumpet-led glory is actually very late, from Bach's final decade in the 1740s, and includes a jovial bass aria in his most up-to-date "popular" manner. The duets of BWV 192 and 157 are deftly done, while the dense and complex choruses of BWV 195 are utterly stunning.
