The success of Hot Chip's odd brand of pop should spark some interest in this similarly inclined Hamburg trio, who comprise a well-regarded techno DJ (Koze), a classically trained musician and a vocalist who is assisted by helium and vocoders. They are so intentionally goofy that they were probably delighted to find that in the East End of London their name translates to International Crap. On this, their second album - which translates as With You We Are Four - they puncture their smooth mix of R&B and exotic techno with sonic curveballs and lyrical wit. The melancholic Velvet incorporates a jarring modem dial-up noise that adds to the Air-like atmospherics. They warn the subject of Gothic Girl that the sunshine may ruin her deathly pallor, and reveal: "She said she likes black music too, but a different kind." So who said Germans have no sense of humour?
