Ólöf Arnalds: Sudden Elevation – review

Icelandic pop singer Ólöf Arnalds reaches new heights on her sparse, idiosyncratic third album, writes Ally Carnwath

Icelandic singer Ólöf Arnalds's emergence as a solo performer has been a gradual but rewarding process. She cut her teeth as a touring member of ambient drifters múm and recorded her first two solo albums in fits and starts, but her third, the first to be recorded in English, feels like a quiet ascension to the heights. Feyness and vocal idiosyncrasy are familiar tics of recent Icelandic pop, but to her credit, Arnalds delivers both without trying your nerves. Her strange, fluting voice twines elegantly around sparse arrangements of piano, acoustic guitar and the charango lute.
