Preservation Hall Jazz Band: St Peter & 57th St – review

This 50th anniversary concert by the New Orleans jazz band captures the essence of the city to winning effect, writes Dave Gelly

Preservation Hall was set up 50 years ago to give New Orleans musicians somewhere to play. It survived floods, tourism and the absence of a drink licence and is now internationally renowned. The first and second generations have passed on but the music is as strong as ever. This celebration, recorded live at Carnegie Hall, features the present band plus such New Orleans heroes as Allen Toussaint and Trombone Shorty. There's something unique about the music of this city – the more it changes with the times the more its essential spirit comes through. And it's guaranteed to cheer you up.
