Heath Brothers: Endurance

Pioneering jazz brothers Jimmy and Albert Heath sound as effortlessly modern on this excellent new record as they did 50 years ago, writes Dave Gelly

There are now only two Heath Brothers, Percy (the bassist) having died five years ago. Happily, Jimmy (saxophonist) and Albert, known as "Tootie", (drummer) still sound as good as ever. Indeed, Jimmy is quite phenomenal. At 83, his tone is as firm and delicate, and his improvised lines as long and mellifluous, as they were back in the 50s. Listening to this, you'd never guess their ages. The music is entirely modern, but with no straining after cutting-edge effect. The brothers are joined by the excellent young piano-and-bass team of Jeb Patton and David Wong.
