Why, after winning Mercury and Grammy nominations, not to mention the esteem of their R&B peers, hasn't this London duo managed to convert American success (700,000 copies of their 2002 debut sold there) into the UK kind? A possible answer is provided by a bit of Geffen Records blurb, which arrived with the delayed second album. Floetry's Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart, it says, were drawn together by a desire to "conquer their passion for music". They conquered it so well that what remains is complete mastery of studio technique but no fabulousness. Their unusual set-up (Ambrosius sings, Stewart raps) keeps things ticking over in a lively way, and Stewart's south-London flow can be a delight: "I wanna ignite the solar in your plexus, so take this and trust us!" But this is solid rather than stunning.
