The first Congotronics album, released back in February, was one of the unexpected delights of the year. Featuring the extraordinary Konono No 1, it was a wild demonstration of the Congo's new DIY music scene, and the band's ability to amplify and distort the sound of the traditional "thumb piano", the likembe, to create a hypnotic dub style. Now comes the follow-up, with tracks from a variety of other bands from Kinshasa, who use likembes along with percussion instruments made from hub caps. This time, there are occasional echoes of the more expected Congo guitar styles, though now predictably distorted, along with call-and-response chanting and endlessly repeated hypnotic riffs.

The energy level is remarkable, and there are some furious work-outs from the likes of Masanka Sankayi and Basokin, but they don't quite match Konono No 1's blend of insistent enthusiasm and improvisation. A live track from Konono is the high point, and the accompanying DVD is also worth checking out as an insight into the new Kinshasa music scene.
