Take Blackbud's swooning indie-pop, with a tendency towards the bombastic; add the mournful, effeminate vocals of Joe Taylor, and you find that comparisons with their label-mates Travisare inevitable. Or, if not Travis, one of many other bands. When Blackbud aren't lifting from Muse' they are pinching from Jeff Buckley and Coldplay - as they do on Goodbye Song (Cold Haroundan), a desolate piece of bluesy songwriting that seems as if it has just been picked off the sole of Chris Martin's leather-free shoes.
Sometimes the occasional piece of grand musical larceny can be perfectly justifiable, if you add a little something more to your spoils - such as personality. Unfortunately, from this album you get no idea who Blackbud actually are, other than that they're three young men whose record collections are well stocked with sombre 1990s rock.
