The Clientele - God Save The Clientele

The Clientele's sound is the sound of New Hampshire, rather than the leafy, English county in which the band grew up: dreamy, intelligent American pop full of Mercury Rev's mistiness and Luna's light-headed loveliness. But although they are doing well in the US - they are signed to the same label as Arcade Fire and touring extensively - they are still playing dusty boltholes back home. This fourth album could help the wind change. Optimism blooms in these reverb-filled landscapes, where moonlight rises on parks and "sunshine waits in the leaves". Invention flowers in songs such as The Dance of the Hours, a story told in whispers to a sweep of strings and pianos. The Beatles' dreamier moments inform every note, too, but not all the songs are weighty enough to be memorable. Still, there's a craft here that gets the music building in stature with every play.
