In the 14 years since their last studio album, Crowded House have delved much further into the melancholy that underpinned hits like Don't Dream It's Over. Time on Earth is clearly a response to drummer Paul Hester's suicide in 2005, following a long period of depression. "In Regent's Park I will mourn for you," Neil Finn sings on English Trees, while Silent House finds him pondering "the years when your mind was still clear". Though Hester is replaced by Matt Sherrod, something of their melodic joie de vivre has been lost. The single Don't Stop Now chugs amiably, and the Johnny Marr co-written Even a Child features trademark Smithsy chimes. Perhaps only Walked Her Way Down truly scales their greater peaks, a song about grabbing life while you can, with the sort of wondrous hookline you'll want to learn and sing.
