With its dreamy vocals, lush melodies and infinite possibility, Field Music's 2005 self-titled debut revealed there was more to the Sunderland sound than punchy post-punk pop.
Having thrown open the doors to an exciting future, here the band work backwards to their beginnings through unreleased tracks and B-sides. Formed from the ashes of previous bands Electronic Eye Machine and the New Tellers, unsurprisingly there are no death metal skeletons in the closet, with all the ELO-inspired elements in place by 2000's Can You See Anything.
But the lush harmonies are few and far between and the band's use of strings is tentative. Test Your Reaction is a scrabble of overzealous ideas, Trying to Sit Out a brief stab at a direction and it's not until In the Kitchen that Field Music are confident enough to add a hard edge - and a north east accent - to their gorgeous, jangly sound.
